North Seattle Families Who Look North on Purpose

Most families begin their search within a few miles of the house they are moving a parent out of. A number of Seattle families do the opposite. They draw the line at the county border and look north of it deliberately, hunting for a kind of setting that barely exists in their own neighbourhood.

What Seattle Families Are Actually Comparing

Within the city, the options near a North Seattle address tend toward the large end of the spectrum: skilled nursing facilities with licensed bed counts in the dozens or hundreds, and assisted living communities organized into apartment wings and shared dining rooms. A six-bed home is a different category of thing altogether, and there are very few of them operating at this level of medical complexity.

The trade families describe is simple enough. They accept a longer drive in exchange for a house where the caregivers know their parent as a person, where the food is cooked in the kitchen, and where the same faces appear every shift instead of a rotating roster.

The Corridor Along the City Line

Northgate, Lake City, Bitter Lake, Broadview, Greenwood, and Haller Lake all sit within a workable distance of our door. Northgate Station, which opened in 2021, anchors that corridor on the 1 Line, and Aurora Ave N runs the full length of it. Drivers pick up I-5 at exits 173 through 175, which puts the interstate within a few minutes of most of these neighbourhoods.

The drive itself is unremarkable, which is the point. Once you are on the interstate the run north is a straight line to the 220th St SW exit, and from there it is surface streets through Edmonds. There is no bridge to cross, no toll, and no route that changes character with the season.

From there, Edmonds is about fifteen to twenty minutes north. That is roughly the length of a Seattle commute, which is the comparison most families end up making.

Keeping Your Own Doctors

Moving across a county line sounds more disruptive than it usually is. UW Medical Center – Northwest at 1550 N 115th St is the hospital many North Seattle households already use, and it stays within a short drive of the home. Residents who see UW Medicine specialists, or who are enrolled in a care program based at that campus, typically continue with the same clinicians after the move.

What to Ask Before You Commit

The vocabulary around senior care is genuinely confusing, and it is worth fifteen minutes of reading before you tour anywhere. MedlinePlus explains the difference between nursing homes and other residential care settings in plain language, including what each level is licensed to do.

Ask about overnight staffing specifically. In a house with six residents the answer involves a small number of people, and you will want to know who they are and how long they have worked there. Ask what happens when a resident's condition changes, and who makes the call about whether the home can still meet that need.

Once you have that straight, come see a six-bed home in person. Families who make the drive north usually say the same thing afterward: the distance was the smallest part of the decision.
